Mardi Gras has been a tradition in Mobile, AL for over 300 years. It is a celebration marking the beginning of Lent, the day before Ash Wednesday. In 1704, Mobile held their first masked ball – 15 years before New Orleans had their first Mardi Gras celebration. The tradition of street parades started in 1711 with a cart sporting a papier-mache cow’s head. The parades, King Cakes, beads, and balls have evolved into spectacular events and definite crowd-pleasers.

With Mardi Gras having such a cult following in the coastal states, we get a week off of school. And, guess what, Mardi Gras break is FINALLY here!

Although I don’t share the excitement the same way as the masses, I do LOVE Mardi Gras! At least the break from school 😉 It gives me a chance to camp and hike. This year, I’ve decided to start section hiking the Pinhoti Trail and the Appalachian Trail. It’s always been a dream of mine to hike the AT. I’ve been trying to find a way to thru hike but it just isn’t going to happen at this point in my life, and I’m no longer willing to delay my trip.

Planning My Trip – Where to Walk

I’ve decided to begin at the southernmost terminus of the Pinhoti Trail and hike the first 5 sections (maybe 6) of the trail. The first two section of the Pinhoti have a lot of road hiking – I’m NOT really excited about these two section but I really want to start at the beginning of the trail. Here is the information about the first 6 sections of the Pinhoti according to the Pinhoti Trail Alliance.

For me, this is a BIG plan. I’m really out of shape. All of the blogs and articles I’ve read say to get into shape before you leave. I don’t have time so we’re going to see how that works out 😐 I have to say I’m not worried about any of the sections except section 6 so I’m going to wait until I’m there to make the decision… I’ll also have to see how much time I have before having to return to work. 😉
